The Daily Nole — Nov. 18, 2018: FSU Soccer to Host USC in NCAA Third Round

Lead Story

Florida State soccer will look to keep the postseason momentum going on Sunday as it hosts USC in the NCAA Tournament’s round of 16. The Seminoles swept through the ACC Tournament and have since defeated Loyola-Chicago and South Florida in the NCAA Tournament.

Junior Deyna Castellanos and ACC Freshman of the Year, Yujie Zhao, have spearheaded the FSU attack this season. Castellanos leads the team with 24 points and nine goals while Zhao has 18 points and seven goals, including one against South Florida on Friday. Caroline Jeffers has been manning the goal for Florida State since the injury to Brooke Bollinger in the ACC Tournament.

USC collected shutout wins over Long Beach State and LSU to open the NCAA Tournament. Senior Leah Pruitt and freshman Penelope Hocking have combined for 65 points and 25 goals this season for the Women of Troy.

FSU and USC are not unfamiliar with one another. The teams played to a scoreless draw in Tallahassee back on Aug. 31 and last met in the NCAA Tournament for the 2007 national championship. The match begins at 1 p.m. EST and will stream on ESPN3.

Between the Lines

FSU swimming and diving wrapped up the Georgia Tech Invite on Saturday. FSU cross country’s team season ended in the NCAA Championships in Madison. FSU football rallied for a thrilling 22-21 win over Boston College.

On the Agenda

In addition to FSU soccer, FSU women’s hoops will host LSU on Sunday. The contest begins at 2 p.m. EST and airs on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

The AP and Amway Coaches Polls will be released on Sunday.

Saturday’s win over Boston College was the first for FSU football over a ranked team since 2016.

FSU soccerdefeated USC on Saturday in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on penalty kicks.
