The Daily Nole – Nov. 10, 2018: FSU Cross Country Teams Advance to NCAA Championships

Lead Story

Florida State’s cross country teams will continue their strong years with an appearance at the NCAA Championships. Both the men’s and women’s teams finished high enough in NCAA South Region Cross Country Championships on Friday to qualify.

The Seminoles were greatly helped by senior Militsa Mircheva, who finished No. 1 in the women’s 6K race. She was one of five Florida State competitors who finished in the top-25. Those include: Elizabeth Funderburk (8th), Maudie Skyring (11th), Megan Mooney (18th), and Jodie Judd (24th) Their stellar performances were good enough to put the Seminoles in the top spot and send them to their first NCAA Championships since 2014.

The men came in second place and confirmed their first visit to the NCAA Championships since 2015. On their end, they had four runners finish in the top-25: Caleb Pottorff (9th), Steven Cross (17th), Toby Hardwick (18th), and Paul Stafford (21st).

The NCAA Division I Championships will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin on Nov. 17 at Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisconsin.

Between the Lines

Florida State soccer defeated Loyola-Chicago on Friday night by a 1-0 margin. The Seminoles will advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Women’s basketball notched their second victory of the season over the North Florida Ospreys. The Seminoles cruised to a 74-53 win with a spectacular effort from Kiah Gillespie, who totaled 17 points, 13 rebounds, four assists.

On the Agenda

FSU football plays Notre Dame at 7:30 tonight. That game will be broadcast on NBC.

News and Notes

Forecast in South Bend has the temperature below freezing at kickoff, but wind below 10 MPH. No snow or precipitation is expected.

Deondre Francois has been named the starter at quarterback against Notre Dame.
