The Daily Nole — Nov. 4, 2018: FSU Faces UNC for ACC Soccer Crown

Lead Story

The ACC will crown a women’s soccer champion on Sunday and Florida State hopes to be that champion. The seventh-seeded Seminoles will take on No. 1 seed North Carolina in the ACC Tournament final.

Despite being just the No. 7 seed, FSU has managed to knock off No. 2 seed Duke and third-seeded Virginia. The Tar Heels have reached the final with wins over eighth-seeded Virginia Tech and No. 5 seed Clemson.

Alessia Russo and Taylor Otto both have 16 points this season to lead a North Carolina team that finished 10-0 against ACC competition during the regular season. Junior Deyna Castellanos and ACC Freshman of the Year Yujie Zhao are the top two scorers for FSU. Castellanos had two goals in the ACC Tournament semifinal over Virginia on Friday night.

North Carolina defeated FSU 1-0 in Tallahassee on Sept. 14 and will be looking for a second straight ACC crown. The Tar Heels eliminated FSU 2-1 in last season’s ACC Tournament after the Seminoles had claimed the previous four conference titles. The match begins at noon EST and airs on ESPNU.

Between the Lines

FSU men’s tennis continued the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate on Saturday. FSU swimming and diving took down Florida Southern on Saturday. FSU football was easily defeated by NC State in Raleigh, 47-28.

On the Agenda

In addition to the ACC Soccer Championship, FSU men’s tennis wraps up the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate on Sunday. FSU volleyball will be at Louisville for a match that begins at 1 p.m. EST on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

The FSU women’s swimming and diving team also defeated North Florida and West Florida on Sunday.

The AP and Amway Coaches football polls will be released on Sunday.
