The Daily Nole — Oct. 8, 2018: Reece Becomes First FSU Volleyball Player to Have Number Retired

Lead Story

Florida State volleyball legend Gabrielle Reece was immortalized prior to Sunday’s match with North Carolina. Reece, who played for FSU from 1987-90, left the university as the program’s all-time leader in blocks.

Reece would play professionally as a volleyball player, but also came to be known as a supermodel, Nike spokesperson and television celebrity. Her No. 6 jersey is the 26th to be retired across the FSU sports spectrum. Reece was inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame in 1997.

As for the match itself, FSU rallied after dropping the first set to win in four, 21-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-15. Junior Payton Caffrey led the team with 16 kills in the victory.

Between the Lines

FSU volleyball defeated North Carolina, 3-1, on Sunday while FSU soccer notched a 2-1 win over Wake Forest. FSU women’s tennis wrapped up the Wildcat Invitational on Sunday.

On the Agenda

FSU men’s golf will begin the Jack Nicklaus Collegiate Invitational on Monday.

News and Notes

FSU head coach Willie Taggart said he’s reached out to the ACC to find “clarity” on the controversial illegal forward pass penalty that negated a touchdown against Miami on Saturday.

FSU wide receiver D.J. Matthews was named ACC Specialist of the Week for his efforts against Miami on Saturday.

The Oct. 20 contest between Florida State and Wake Forest will begin at 3:30 p.m. EST and air on ESPN2.
