FSU-Louisville: Game Balls

Florida State mounted a successful comeback against the Louisville Cardinals and finished on the winning side of a 28-24 final score on Saturday. The game was a roller coaster of emotions, but the Seminoles played well when it mattered and are now over .500 for the first time in 2018.

Which players deserve notoriety for the efforts at Louisville? Editor Mike Ferguson and lead writer Clint Eiland hand out their game balls to the best Seminoles in each phase of the game:

Offense

Unanimous Game Ball: Deondre Francois, QB
Deondre Francois did not have a good first half. He was missing open receivers, making the wrong reads, and running out of clean pockets. But in the second half, Francois took his game to the next level and helped lead the Seminoles to victory. He finished the game with 294 yards and four touchdowns total. His second half stat line was 11-for-15, 218 passing yards, and three touchdowns.

Defense

Mike: A.J. Westbrook, SS
It seems like the 2016 contest against Louisville provided motivation for the senior safety. Westbrook finished with the most tackles on the team (10) and came up with a late fourth quarter interception that gave FSU a chance to win it in the end.

Clint: Marvin Wilson, DT
Florida State’s defensive line played very well on Saturday, and perhaps no player impressed more than defensive tackle Marvin Wilson. His raw numbers weren’t anything special but he was a constant force in the backfield and provoked multiple throwaways.

Special Teams

Unanimous Game Ball: D.J. Matthews, WR
One of the worst showings from a special teams unit in FSU history still had a clear standout. Returner D.J. Matthews had trouble finding room most of the day, but he was able to scamper for 32 yards late in the third quarter. That helped set up the 54-yard touchdown to Tamorrion Terry on the very next play.
