The Daily Nole — Sept. 15, 2018: FSU Soccer Falls to No. 6 UNC, 1-0

Perrone Ford/FSU athletics

It’s game day, Florida State fans. As you settle in to watch the Seminoles take on Syracuse, keep it here for the latest in FSU athletics. The news and notes section of this post will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

Florida State soccer suffered its first loss of the season on Friday night against the No. 6 North Carolina Tar Heels. The No. 2 ranked Seminoles fell 1-0 after a shutdown performance by the North Carolina defense.

The Seminoles struggled with offensive opportunities for the entire night. North Carolina held Florida State to no shots on goal and just eight shots total. Meanwhile, despite a similarly impressive defensive performance on FSU’s side, North Carolina was able to connect on a 28th-minute goal from Rachel Jones and keep the slim lead for the whole game. FSU goalkeeper Brooke Bollinger made two saves the rest of the night.

It was a disappointing start to ACC play for FSU, considering the offense was very productive through the first eight games. The Seminoles averaged over two goals per contest and had defeated the No. 4 UCLA Bruins by three goals just a couple weeks prior. FSU is still in a good position for the rest of September and will almost certainly maintain a top-10 ranking.

FSU is back in action next Thursday against the Virginia Tech Hokies. That game will be played in Tallahassee at 7 p.m. EST.

Between the Lines

Aside from soccer, FSU men’s golf is in 12th place after opening the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational on Friday. FSU men’s tennis began the fall season with the Thomasville Collegiate Invite. FSU cross country competed at Boston University.

On the Agenda

FSU men’s golf and men’s tennis will continue their events on Saturday. FSU football visits Syracuse at 12 p.m. EST on ESPN.

News and Notes

FSU was defeated by Syracuse on Saturday, 30-7.
