During the Thursday morning interview session at IMG Academy, Florida State head coach Willie Taggart confirmed to reporters that defensive end Tre Lawson is no longer with the program.

The former 3-star recruit had not been with the team since last week, according to a report from the Tallahassee Democrat. He made headlines when he got into a fight at practice with offensive tackle Jauan Williams. The two were separated and forced to hold hands while walking off the field, but Taggart initially wanted to kick Lawson out.

According to the Democrat report, Lawson was struggling academically and was a long shot to qualify for the 2018 season. He did not make the trip with the Seminoles to IMG Academy.

A redshirt freshman, Lawson was a late addition to the 2017 recruiting class at a position where there was a definite need at the time. There was no guarantee however, that Lawson would have ever made meaningful contributions with Brian Burns, Wally Aime, Janarius Robinson and Joshua Kaindoh all expected to be mainstays in the lineup this year.

The Seminoles also brought in a number of freshmen at the position in Dennis Briggs, Jamarcus Chatman, Malcolm Lamar and Xavier Peters. FSU also has five defensive ends committed for 2019, although Derick Hunter is expected to move inside to defensive tackle and Mike Morris to the offensive side of the football.
