The Daily Nole — Aug. 8, 2018: FSU’s Akers, Taylor Among ESPN’s Best 50 Players

Happy hump day, Florida State fans. As the week goes on and the new athletic year approaches, keep it here for the latest in FSU athletics. The news and notes section of this post will be updated throughout the day.

A pair of Florida State players were named ESPN’s list of the nation’s top 50 players, which was released on Monday.

Running back Cam Akers came in at No. 21 on the list while cornerback Levonta Taylor was No. 34. Akers, a sophomore, set the FSU freshman rushing record last season with 1,024 yards and eight total touchdowns. Taylor was rarely thrown at while recording two interceptions — both against Florida — and returning one for a touchdown.

Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver topped the list. Among ACC players, Clemson posted two in the top five in defensive tackles Christian Wilkins at No. 4 and Dexter Lawrence at No. 5.

FSU’s group of running backs was ranked fifth nationally by Athlon Sports.

FSU defensive end Xavier Peters has qualified academically, according to a report.
