The Daily Nole — June 6, 2018: Warren Named Most Outstanding Player of WCWS

Happy hump day, Florida State fans. Hopefully you’re well-rested after FSU softball claimed the program’s first national championship on Tuesday night. The news and notes section of this post will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

For the first time in program history, Florida State is champions of college softball. The Seminoles claimed the crown with an 8-3 victory over Washington on Tuesday night.

The Most Outstanding Player of the Women’s College World Series was senior third baseman Jessie Warren for her performance over seven games. During the championship series against the Huskies, Warren was 5-for-8 with a home run, two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Her best work however, may have come in the field.

In the first game of the series, Warren made a diving grab on a bunt attempt in the the seventh inning before doubling off a runner at first. Warren finishes her career as FSU’s and the ACC’s all-time leader in home runs and RBIs.

FSU softball’s national championship victory was the only scheduled athletic event for Tuesday.

FSU track and field opens up the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday in Eugene, Oregon.

News and Notes

The Major League Baseball Draft continues on Wednesday with the final 30 rounds. Five FSU players were selected on Tuesday.

FSU catcher Cal Raleigh was named National Player of the Month by NCBWA for May.

FSU pitcher Tyler Holton has announced that he will sign with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Holton was selected in the ninth round on Tuesday.

Rhett Aplin was taken by the Kansas City Royals in the 28th round.

Cobi Johnson was selected in the 30th round by the Toronto Blue Jays.
