For what has been a tumultuous offseason, Florida State received some good news on Friday.

According to a release, leading scorer Phil Cofer will get a fifth year of eligibility. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 12.8 points and 5.1 rebounds while shooting 49 percent from the field last season.

Cofer was one of the ACC’s most pleasant surprises after a disappointing junior year during the 2016-17 season. The reason for Cofer’s extra year of eligibility was likely because his sophomore season of 2015-16 was limited to 11 games by a leg injury.

An extra year for Cofer is certainly welcomed for a team coming off its first Elite Eight appearance in 25 years. The Seminoles finished 23-12 last season, beating Missouri, Xavier and Gonzaga in the NCAA Tournament before falling to Michigan in the Elite Eight.

The lone graduation loss for the Seminoles will be guard Braian Angola. FSU will have to replace guard C.J. Walker and center Ike Obiagu, who each transferred this offseason.

The Seminoles did add David Nichols, a graduate transfer from Albany. FSU can add another body as it is still one player under the scholarship limit.
