FSU Softball Crushes Jacksonville State, Bound for Supers

Jacksonville State managed to go longer than five innings in its Tallahassee Softball Regional rematch with No. 6 national seed Florida State, but that was about the only bright spot for the Gamecocks.

The Seminoles (50-10) clinched a sixth straight Super Regional appearance on Sunday with a 10-0 win at JoAnn Graf Field. FSU finishes a perfect 3-0 in the regional, outscoring opponents, 20-1.

Florida State broke things open with a 5-run third inning. Anna Shelnutt and Dani Morgan got the scoring start with sacrifice flies in the inning before Cali Harrod and Cassidy Davis broke through with RBI hits. The Seminoles added two more an inning later with an RBI double from Sydney Sherrill and an RBI single from Zoe Casas.

Those two made some more noise in the seventh inning as Sherrill blasted a 2-run home run before Casas came through with an RBI double. Sherrill, Casas and Jessie Warren all had three hits for FSU in the victory. Sherill drove in three runs and scored twice while Casas was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.

In two games with FSU, Jacksonville State (35-25) managed just two total hits. The Gamecocks kept their season alive on Saturday with a 10-inning win over Kennesaw State and a 3-2 victory over Auburn — both in elimination games.

Jacksonville State had no answer for FSU pitcher Kylee Hanson, who picked up the win by throwing six scoreless innings of relief and allowing just one hit while striking out 11. Hanson struck out 13 of the 15 batters she faced in a 5-inning no-hitter on Friday. Faith Sims allowed four runs in 2 1/3 innings to take the loss for the Gamecocks on Sunday.

The Seminoles will now host a best-of-three Super Regional against either No. 11 national seed LSU or Louisiana-Lafayette. LSU topped the Seminoles in three games during last year’s Tallahassee Super Regional.
