The Daily Nole Poll: Miami Will be FSU’s Second-Toughest ACC Game in 2018

After a week-long hiatus from posting another poll, the voters — or perhaps more appropriately, our Twitter followers — have spoken.

On Thursday, we asked which ACC opponent other than Clemson would give Florida State the toughest game this coming season. Having won the ACC title in each of the last three years and making the College Football Playoff each time, most would predict that the Tigers would be FSU’s toughest contest.

Aside from Clemson, most expect that rival Miami will give the Seminoles the toughest time in 2018. Florida State had won seven straight over its rivals before falling at home last season, 24-20.

In 2017, the Hurricanes won their first ACC Coastal division title last season and recorded 10 wins and a major bowl berth for the first time since 2003. FSU will visit Miami on Oct. 6. The Seminoles haven’t lost a road game to Miami since 2006.

Miami received 44 percent of the vote while Virginia Tech got 27 percent of the vote. The Seminoles will host the Hokies to start the season on Sept. 3. The teams haven’t met in Tallahassee since 2008 and not at all since FSU won a thriller on a Thursday night in Blacksburg in 2012, 28-22. Virginia Tech finished 9-4 and ranked 24th in the country last season.

NC State, where FSU will have to visit to open November, got 18 percent of the vote. The Wolfpack won in Tallahassee last season 27-21 to snap a 4-game losing streak to the Seminoles. Florida State rallied from double-digits down to win in each of its last two trips to Raleigh, but lost the two prior and is just 5-5 at Carter-Finley Stadium in its last 10 trips.

11 percent of the voters said other. Other ACC foes on the schedule for Florida State in 2018 include Boston College, Louisville, Syracuse and Wake Forest.

We’ll have another poll for you next week.
