Florida State baseball used a late game offensive surge to beat the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers 12-2 on Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium.

FSU improves to 34-16 and will play a doubleheader on Saturday against the Mountaineers.

The Good: Florida State was fairly dormant until the sixth inning, when the offense came alive and ran up the score on the Mountaineers with four runs on three hits. Each of Reese Albert, Mike Salvatore, and Cal Raleigh contributed at the plate, with the latter two collecting in three RBIs. The effort on offense was disappointing up until that frame. The Seminoles tacked on five more runs over the final three innings.

The Bad: Mount St. Mary’s did have some life in them for the first half of the game. But what killed its momentum was batting with runners on base. The Mountaineers finished 0-for-12 in this category, which prevented their offense from getting into a rhythm and prematurely stunted their opportunities.

The Ugly: Florida State’s defense was detrimental on Friday night. A dropped throw to second and a dropped fly in center field allowed two runs from Mount St. Mary’s early in the game. Overall these mistakes did not decide the outcome, but they encapsulated a poor effort from the Seminoles which kept the game tied until the aforementioned sixth inning explosion.

Studs of the Game: Drew Parrish racked up the strikeouts once again — this time tallying 11 in seven innings. He also allowed just one earned run. Jackson Lueck had a stellar night with two hits, three RBIs, one home run, and two runs of his own.

Duds of the Game: Jesse Archambault came in as a reliever for the Mountaineers in the fifth inning. It didn’t work out so well, as he gave up six earned runs and five walks in two innings of work.

Extra Innings: This was FSU outfielder J.C. Flowers’ first game back since he suffered a broken jaw. I don’t understand how these guys do it. If I had a broken jaw playing baseball, I think I’d just sit out the rest of the season regardless of my availability.
