Florida State head coach Willie Taggart has received the first quarterback commit of his tenure. On Monday night, 4-star pro-style passer Sam Howell made a surprise announcement that he was committing to Florida State.

Howell is a longtime target of quarterbacks coach/offensive coordinator Walt Bell, who started recruiting him early in high school. The Seminoles offered him on Feb. 7 and Howell visited FSU back on March 31.

He brought his parents along with him for the visit, prompting some to predict that FSU was a top contender. On Saturday, 247Sports reported that he planned to return to campus for the Spring Game. Howell is from North Carolina (Sun Valley High School) and was considered a Clemson lean up until recently.

In terms of his ability, Howell doesn’t truly fit the “pro-style” label. He’s very skilled at throwing on the run, and his tape is full of plays that involve his ability to maneuver downfield. He has good velocity with his passes and always keeps his eyes on his receivers.

The Daily Nole discussed him more in depth on the most recent episode of The Weekly Nole.

Howell is ranked as the seventh best quarterback and 152nd overall recruit. according to 247Sports composite. He’s the sixth commit of the 2019 FSU recruiting class and brings the Seminoles up from 15th to 10th nationally and second in the ACC behind only Miami.
