FSU Tops Wake in ACC Opener, 7-3

FSU athletics

A 5-run seventh inning on Friday night was the difference for Florida State as the Seminoles topped Wake Forest in the first of three games, 7-3.

Cole Sands picked up the win to improve to 14-0 on the season and 1-0 in ACC play. The two teams will wrap up the series in Winston-Salem on Saturday with a doubleheader.

The Good: Pitching continued to be a strong suit for FSU on Friday night. Cole Sands worked six sold innings, allowing two runs. Jonah Scolaro worked three innings and gave up just one unearned run to pick up the save. The offense also continued to produce for FSU with seven runs on 10 hits.

The Bad: Neither team did a great job making contact on Friday night. The Seminoles and Demon Deacons combined to strike out 29 times. FSU struck out 15 times while Wake finished with 14 whiffs.

The Ugly: Wake Forest’s final run of the game was unearned and came in bizarre fashion. With the bases loaded in a 7-2 game, FSU catcher Cal Raleigh tried a snap throw down to third base, but hit the right-handed batter in the head, allowing the runner from third to come home.

Studs of the Game: In addition to Sands and Scolaro on the mound, Jackson Lueck went 2-for-4 at the plate with the 2-run home run in the seventh that put FSU ahead for good. Drew Mendoza also had two runs and two RBIs in the win. Wake Forest’s Jake Mueller was 2-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base.

Duds of the Game: Johnny Aiello and Bobby Seymour were each 0-for-4 for Wake Forest with a combined five strikeouts. FSU’s Steven Wells was 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in the win.
