FSU Senior Moments: Trey Marshall

FSU athletics

The send-off wasn’t what most of Florida State’s seniors had hoped for, but nevertheless, the accomplishments as a program that this year’s senior class helped with are many. With the regular season in the books and only the Independence Bowl to be played, we’ll be looking back on the careers of some prominent FSU seniors.

The outgoing senior class for the Seminoles was part of the first College Football Semifinal ever and helped FSU finish in the top 10 twice and play in three New Year’s Six bowls. Some departing seniors contributed each season while others had small parts in the grand scheme of things.

Our final individual spotlight will be on another safety in Trey Marshall. Marshall never broke out as many expected him to toward the end of his freshman season, but he was a 4-year contributor for some good FSU defenses.

Like many other current seniors for the Seminoles, Marshall was a team-first guy, playing both at safety and the “STAR” position throughout the course of his career. Marshall was also a big hitter, who improved in pass coverage as his career went on.

Throughout his career at FSU, Marshall has more than 130 tackles to his name, which includes six for loss. As Marshall dons the garnet and gold one final time in the Independence Bowl, here’s a look at the five best moments of his Florida State career:

5. First Career Tackle for Loss
Sept. 6, 2014

Trey Marshall’s first career stop for loss was a half-tackle during his first-ever home game as a member of the Seminoles. In a 37-12 win over The Citadel, Marshall and Reggie Northrup combined to take down The Citadel’s Vinny Miller for a loss of five early in the fourth quarter. Marshall’s next stop for loss wouldn’t come for another three months.

4.First Career Sack
Sept. 5, 2015

It took Trey Marshall just one game into his sophomore season to notch his first career sack. Marshall recorded the first sack of the season for FSU as he took down Texas State’s Tyler Jones for a 12-yard loss near midfield. The Seminoles would win the game, 59-16.

3. Big Game vs. Clemson
Oct. 29, 2016

Florida State wasn’t able to beat eventual national champion Clemson in 2016, but Trey Marshall did everything he could to keep the Seminoles in it. Marshall led FSU with 11 tackles and was all over the field in the 37-34 loss. Unfortunately for Marshall, he would be ejected in the fourth quarter for targeting, which could have been a difference-maker as the Tigers rallied to win.

2. Marshall Helps FSU Win ACC
Dec. 6, 2014

Trey Marshall’s first taste of extended playing time came in one of the bigger games he would ever play in — the 2014 ACC Championship. In a 37-35 win over Georgia Tech, Marshall finished with a season-high five tackles and one tackle for loss in the victory. The win allowed FSU to improve to 13-0 and clinch a spot in the first-ever College Football Playoff.

1. Monster Game at Wake
Oct. 3, 2015

Arguably the best game of Trey Marshall’s career came on the road against Wake Forest in 2015. The sophomore recorded a game-high 11 tackles and one pass break-up as the Seminoles defeated the Demon Deacons, 24-16. For his efforts, Marshall would be named the ACC Defensive Back of the Week for the first and only time in his FSU career.
