Florida State women’s basketball had another dominant outing on Thursday night, defeating the Stetson Hatters, 84-39, at the Donald L. Tucker Center.

Sue Semrau’s team had some early struggles with keeping the ball in their hands. The Seminoles were bailed out offensively with some good shooting, though Semrau made sure that they corrected the issue after the first quarter.

Defensively, they were not doing all that well. Stetson couldn’t score consistently, but some noticeable issues prevented FSU from running away with it.

Florida State ran away with the game in the second half. In addition to having much more talented players, the Seminoles regrouped on defense and stifled Stetson with a zone. Their offensive pace was unstoppable and it was an easy victory from then on.

Observations

  • Florida State was very sloppy with the ball to start the game. In the first three minutes, it had four turnovers. The Seminoles kept trying to feed it into the post but were having no luck whatsoever. It wasn’t so much inaccurate passing as it was poor decision making.
  • The Seminoles got fairly lucky however. Stetson was unable to capitalize on the five turnovers in the first quarter despite getting good looks.
  • FSU saw a lot of success running the ball through the high post. Stetson really struggled with preventing players like Chatrice White and Iho Lopez from getting the ball. They weren’t even the ones scoring as they would pop it to the outside for good shots.
  • Shakayla Thomas did not have a good offensive outing in the first half. Her rebounding and defense were great, but multiple times she tried to drive in and shoot only to get it knocked away. It didn’t matter in the end, but it was still odd to see her struggle against a team like Stetson.
  • The Hatters certainly knew how to swat the ball. You can blame FSU for poor decision making, but Stetson was on top of it defensively in that respect.
  • Defense from FSU’s guards was suspect in the first half. They let up way too many open shots. Stetson just couldn’t hit them, and it had little success going inside against the Seminoles’ bigs.
  • General numbers for the first half: FSU went 52 percent from the floor and 56 percent from three. Stetson went 30 percent and 23 percent respectively. FSU out-rebounded the Hatters, 24-13.
  • Florida State picked up the pace for the second half. It had immediate results and flustered Stetson. It able to extend the lead in a short couple of minutes.
  • The Seminoles switched to a zone defense for most of the third quarter. Stetson had no answer, going just 3-for-15 in the quarter and only notching 10 points.
  • Florida State’s insane numbers from deep are a scary prospect for any team wanting to stop its offense. That being said, this game it relied on guard A.J. Alix much more than it should’ve. Outside of her, the team went 4-for-12 from 3-point range.

Notable Numbers

A.J. Alix (FSU): 19 points (7-for-9), 6 assists, 2 rebounds

Nicki Ekhomu (FSU): 16 points (6-for-10), 7 rebounds, 4 assists

Brittney Chambers (STET): 19 points (6-for-21), 2 rebounds, 1 steal
