FSU Tennis Advances at NCAA Tournament

Florida State’s men’s and women’s tennis teams each advanced in regional play on Friday.

The second-seeded men’s team advanced at the Fort Worth Regional by defeating third-seeded Arkansas, 4-1. After winning the doubles point, FSU’s Rana Roop Bhullar, Alex Knaff and Jose Garcia all won in straight sets to take the match for the Seminoles.

The lone Arkansas point came from Jose Salazar, who defeated Guy Iradukunda in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Aziz Dougaz and Lucas Poullain were each trailing for the Seminoles when the match ended.

The third-seeded women’s team advanced by upsetting No. 2 seed Arizona State in the Auburn Regional, 4-2. After winning the doubles point, Florida State dropped the first two singles matches in straight sets to fall behind 2-1. The Seminoles however responded with three straight victories.

Gabriella Castaneda won a tiebreak point the second set against Arizona State’s Kassidy Jump to win in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6. Nandini Das did likewise for the Seminoles, beating the Sun Devils’ Sammi Hampton, 6-3, 7-6. Ariana Rahmanparast then clinched the match for FSU with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Arizona State’s Gussie O’Sullivan.

With the win, the FSU women will advance to face either host and No. 11 national seed Auburn or DePaul. The men will face either TCU, the regional’s top seed, or Jackson State.
