North Carolina got the better of both the Florida men’s and women’s tennis teams on Friday. The Tar Heels eliminated the Seminoles in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament in Rome, Georgia.

The sixth-seeded men opened the day by falling to No. 3 seed North Carolina, 4-1. The Seminoles nearly got the doubles point after splitting on the first two courts, but the combination of Terrance and Terrell Whitehurst couldn’t hold a 6-5 lead against North Carolina’s Anu Kodola and Ronnie Schneider. The Tar Heels won the final two points, including 7-1 in the tiebreak.

The only men’s player to get a win in was Lucas Poullain, who defeated North Carolina’s Simon Soendergaard, 6-2, 6-1. Florida State’s Terrance Whitehurst and Alex Knaff didn’t need to finish their matches, but were each down a set when UNC’s Ronnie Schneider defeated Aziz Dougaz to clinch the match, 7-5, 6-2.

The ninth-seeded FSU women fell by an identical 4-1 score. The Seminoles became just the fifth team all season to take the doubles point from top-seeded North Carolina as Gabriella Castaneda and Daniela Schippers clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win over Sara Daavettila and Makenna Jones.

When it came to singles however, the Tar Heels took the first four matches with three coming in straight sets to clinch the victory. Andrea Garcia was one point away from clinching her match for FSU against Jones when things ended. Florida State’s Ariana Rahmanparast was down 5-2 in the third set when the Tar Heels clinched.

With the win, the UNC women will advance to take on No. 4 Miami in the semifinals on Saturday. The Tar Heel men will take on second-seeded Virginia.
