The Daily Nole — March 25, 2017: FSU Women Face Oregon State in Sweet 16

It’s the weekend, Florida State fans. Before you get set to take it in with your family or friends or kick back and watch the game, keep it here for the latest in FSU athletics. The news and notes section will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

A second trip to the Elite Eight in three years will be on the line for Florida State’s women’s hoops team as the No. 3 seed Seminoles will be out in Stockton, California to take on No. 2 seed Oregon State in the Sweet 16 on Saturday night.

The Seminoles have made it to this point with back-to-back blowout wins over Western Illinois and Missouri. Oregon State’s run has not come as easy. The Beavers held off 15th-seed Long Beach State by one before beating Creighton, 64-52.

Sydney Wiese has led Oregon State this season, averaging better than 15 points per game while Marie Gulich is a force down low. ACC Player of the Year Shakayla Thomas is the player to watch for Florida State, but Leticia Romero is also a formidable guard. The Seminoles are at their best when they’re sharing the basketball.

Saturday’s contest begins at 6:30 p.m. EST and will air on ESPN.

Between the Lines

The FSU swimming and diving teams competed in the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis while track and field team was at home for the FSU relays on Friday. Both the FSU men and women’s tennis teams beat Louisville by a 4-0 score. FSU softball defeated Virginia, 13-1. The FSU baseball team swept Notre Dame in a doubleheader.

On the Agenda

In addition to basketball, FSU beach volleyball will be in South Carolina to take on USC and Georgia State. FSU softball will again be at Virginia. FSU baseball wraps up its series with Notre Dame at 4 p.m. EST. The contest will air on ACC Network.

News and Notes

Drew Parrish will make the start for Florida State in the series finale with Notre Dame.

Drew Parrish’s complete game made way for Florida State to sweep Notre Dame with a 5-1 win on Saturday.

Florida State’s women closed the game on a 20-7 run to beat Oregon State and advance to Elite Eight, 66=53.
