With an 11-3 victory over Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, Florida State head baseball coach Mike Martin became just the second coach in college baseball history to win 1,900 games.

“It is the main reason most of us decided to come here,” first baseman Quincy Nieporte said following the 11-3 victory. “To be a part of a monumental win in a legend’s career is special, it’s an honor.”

Martin who is now 1,900-672-4 all-time as the head skipper sits just 75 wins shy of passing legendary Texas head ball coach Augie Garrido for the most wins in college baseball history.

“It does mean something; (winning 1,900 games) it means something because of the affection and love I have for not only my job but for this university,” Martin said.

Martin has led the Seminoles to 37 consecutive regional tournaments and 15 College World Series appearances in his 38 years at Florida State. The 2007 Hall of Fame inductee has won at least 40 games in each season, including 24 seasons with at least 50 wins.

Martin or as many around Dick Howser Stadium refer to him as “Eleven” shows no signs of quitting anytime soon. Florida State has one of the best ball clubs in the country and has been pegged to make a deep run into the postseason in 2017.

“We have had some outstanding athletes here in our program,” Martin said. “I’m glad I have had the time to work with them.”

With one of the best lineups in the country, and three returning starters on the mound, Eleven has a very promising chance to reach 40 wins for a 38th consecutive season. Martin also hopes to make that trip to Omaha, Nebraska for the College World Series for the 16th time in 2017.
