FSU athletics

It’s the weekend, Florida State fans. Before you settle in to watch FSU basketball and baseball, keep it here for the latest in FSU athletics. The news and notes section will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

Florida State’s softball team was forced to rally for the first time this season on Friday in the Big Ten/ACC Softball Challenge. The Seminoles did just that with a 3-2 walk-off victory over Northwestern.

FSU drew first blood with a solo home run from third baseman Jessica Warren in the first inning, but the Wildcats answered with two runs in the third. Warren’s RBI double in the fifth inning evened things up and the score remained tied at 2 until the bottom of the seventh.

With Morgan Klaevemann on second and no one out, Ellie Cooper laid down a bunt, which was thrown into right field by Brooke Marquez. The errant throw allowed Klaevemann to score the winning run as FSU improved to 6-0. FSU will face Northwestern and Nebraska on Saturday.

Between the Lines

Outside of softball, the FSU track and field team competed in the Virginia Tech Challenge. FSU baseball dropped its opener to Virginia Commonwealth, 3-0.

On the Agenda

In addition to two softball games, FSU track and field will compete in the UCS Invitational in Winston-Salem. The FSU men’s golf team will be in Gainesville for the SunTrust Gator Invitational. The women’s tennis team will host Air Force.

FSU baseball will look to even its series with Virginia Commonwealth at 1 p.m. EST. That contest airs on ACC Network Extra. Also airing on ACC Network Extra will be FSU’s women’s basketball team hosting Clemson at 2 p.m. The FSU men will travel to face Pittsburgh. That games begins at 4 p.m. EST and airs on ESPN2.

News and Notes

2019 prospects Ronald Thompkins, a running back, athlete Jay McCollough and tackle Wanya Morris were all offered scholarships by FSU on Friday.

Saturday is Florida State’s Junior Day for football recruits.

3-star defensive end Kayode Oladele committed to FSU on Saturday. He’s the seventh member of FSU’s 2018 class.

One hour later FSU landed a second defensive end in 4-star Orlando product, Stacy Kirby.
