For you Florida State fans ending your work week, happy Friday. For others, we’ll try to get you through it. The news and notes section of this post will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

The wait for Florida State baseball is finally over. Florida State kicks off its 2017 season at home on Friday against Virginia Commonwealth.

The Seminoles finished 41-22 last season, narrowly missing the College World Series. With the exception of John Sansone and Ben DeLuzio, FSU returns virtually everyone in the lineup.

Drew Carlton, a junior from Lakeland, will get the start on the mound for FSU on Friday. Carlton threw a 2-hit shutout against rival Florida in the Gainesville Super Regional to conclude his 2016 campaign. He’ll be matched up with VCU’s Sean Thompson, who posted a 6-1 record and 3.28 ERA last season.

The Rams finished the 2016 season with a record of 38-19. Friday’s game begins at 4 p.m. EST and will air on ACC Network Extra.

Between the Lines

FSU’s Molly Carlson was the ACC platform diving champion. FSU women’s basketball fell at Virginia on Thursday, 60-51.

On the Agenda

In addition to baseball, the FSU track and field team will be in Blacksburg for the Virginia Tech Challenge. The men’s tennis team will be in Charlottesville for the ITA Division I national championships. FSU softball kicks off the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at home against Northwestern. That one begins at 6:30 p.m. EST and airs on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

Shakayla Thomas, FSU women’s basketball’s leading scorer, was injured in Thursday’s loss at Virginia. Thomas likely will not play in Sunday’s game versus Clemson.

Senior right-hander Jim Voyles will serve as FSU’s closer to start the 2017 season.

FSU managed just one hit on Friday night as the Seminoles fell 3-0 in their season-opener against Virginia Commonwealth.
