The Daily Nole — Feb. 14, 2017: FSU Women Drop Heartbreaker to Texas

Lead Story

Florida State’s fourth-ranked women’s basketball team let what was a 13-point lead late in the third quarter slip away late Monday night in a heartbreaking 92-88 overtime loss to No. 8 Texas.

The Longhorns were propelled by a big fourth quarter and led by three late, but FSU’s Leticia Romero knocked down a 3-pointer with one second left to force overtime. FSU forward Chatrice White split a pair of free throws late in the first overtime to force a second, but with Romero and Ivey Slaughter having both fouled out, the Seminoles eventually ran out of gas.

Shakayla Thomas led FSU with 23 points and 11 rebounds, but on a dismal 9-for-34 shooting. Ama Degbeon and Brittany Brown each scored 13 points. Romero finished with 12 and Imani Wright scored 11. Brooke McCarty scored a career-high 29 points to lead Texas while Ariel Atkins chipped in with 21 points. Joyner Holmes finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Longhorns.

Between the Lines

Aside from basketball, the FSU swimming and diving team began competition at the ACC Tournament.

On the Agenda

FSU will continue the ACC swimming and diving meet on Tuesday.

News and Notes

Florida State’s football pro day is set for March 28.

FSU will begin spring football practice on March 6.

FSU football players have been working on constructing a home for Habitat for Humanity.

Florida State sprinter Darryl Haraway was recognized as the ACC Men’s Track Performer of the Week.
