The Daily Nole — Jan. 15, 2017: FSU Men’s Tennis Starts Season 2-0

It’s Sunday, Florida State fans. For the second day in a row, that comes with a pretty loaded slate. We’ll keep you up to date on the latest in FSU athletics by updating the news and notes section throughout the day.

Lead Story

Florida State’s men’s tennis team started the 2017 dual match season on the right foot on Saturday with victories over South Alabama and Louisiana-Lafayette.

The Seminoles opened the day with a 4-0 win over the Ragin’ Cajuns. After racing to a 3-0 lead over South Alabama, the Jaguars roared back with three straight victories to force a decisive match, which was won by FSU’s Jose Garcia to give the Seminoles a 4-3 victory.

FSU has now won 16 straight season-openers under head coach Dwayne Hultquist. FSU will continue the Florida State Invitational on Sunday.

Between the Lines

Aside from tennis, the FSU swimming and diving team defeated Pittsburgh. FSU’s track and field teams competed at the Clemson Invitational. FSU’s men’s basketball team lost to No. 11 North Carolina, 96-83.

On the Agenda

In addition to the Florida State Invitational continuing, FSU’s women’s basketball team will visit Clemson. The contest begins at 2 p.m. EST and can be seen on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

4-star wide receiver Henry Ruggs took his official visit to Florida State on Saturday.

FSU landed 3-star defensive Tre Lawson on Sunday. Lawson is the 20th member of FSU’s 2017 recruiting class.
