The weekend has finally arrived, Florida State fans. It’s expected to be a big Saturday, headlined with Saturday’s men’s basketball game. We’ll keep you up to date on the latest in FSU athletics by updating the news and notes section as the day goes on.

Lead Story

One soon-to-be Florida State senior can now turn his attention to Sept. 2, 2017 against Alabama. Safety Ermon Lane said via social media on Friday that he underwent successful foot surgery.

The foot injury forced Lane to miss Florida State’s 33-32 Orange Bowl victory over Michigan last month. Lane, who converted from wide receiver midseason, was one of the pleasant surprises of the 2016 season for the Seminoles.

As a junior in 2016, Lane finished with 37 total tackles and an interception. He’ll be expected to compete for playing time as a senior next season and a possible starting spot.

Between the Lines

FSU’s swimming and diving teams were in Pittsburgh on Friday.

On the Agenda

FSU track and field will be in Clemson for the Clemson Invitational. FSU’s men’s tennis team hosts Louisiana-Lafayette and then either South Alabama or Florida Atlantic. FSU’s swimming and diving teams will continue to compete in Pittsburgh against the Panthers and Denison. The meet with Pittsburgh begins at 10 a.m. EST and will air on ACC Network.

FSU’s ninth-ranked men’s basketball team will visit No. 11 North Carolina. That one begins at 2 p.m. EST and airs on ESPN.

News and Notes

Former Florida State running back James Wilder Jr. will try his hand at linebacker in the NFL. Wilder has had trouble staying on a roster since leaving FSU after his junior year of 2013.

No. 11 North Carolina topped FSU on Saturday, 96-83. Tar Heels’ guard Joel Berry led all scorers with 26 points.

FSU women’s guard Leticia Romero was named to the Midseason Wooden Award Top 25 watch list.
