We’re one day away from the Capital One Orange Bowl and three days away from the new year, Florida State fans. We’ll help get you through this Thursday by updating the news and notes section as the day moves along.

Lead Story

Florida State rival Miami is off the schneid. On Wednesday evening, the Hurricanes beat No. 16 West Virginia 31-14 in the Russell Athletic Bowl for their first bowl victory since 2006.

Regardless of what some down south may have you believe, the victory isn’t a symbol for Miami’s return to prominence, but it does represent progress. The Hurricanes have improved record-wise from last season and will finish the year on a 5-game winning streak and likely in the top 25 under first-year head coach Mark Richt.

Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya passed for 282 yards and four touchdowns in the win as the ACC improved to 4-1 in bowl games this year. As far as the rivalry goes, Miami will travel to Tallahassee next season as it looks to end a 7-game losing streak to the Seminoles.

Between the Lines

No. 20 Florida State hoops closed the game on a 27-6 run to defeat Wake Forest in the ACC opener for both teams, 88-72. Xavier Rathan-Mayes and Dwayne Bacon each scored 23 points to pace FSU.

On the Agenda

FSU women’s hoops opens ACC play on Thursday at Miami. The contest starts at 7 p.m. and airs on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

FSU commit Joshua Kaindoh was 247Sports’ Alpha Dog for the first day of Under Armour All-American practices.

FSU junior tackle Roderick Johnson will decide whether or not to return for a senior year after the Orange Bowl.
