The Daily Nole — Dec. 12, 2016: Burns Named Freshman All-American

Following a big win on the basketball court Sunday, Florida State fans can expect a relatively slow week. We’ll help you get through it by updating the news and notes section of this post throughout the day.

Lead Story

Florida State freshman defensive end Brian Burns was named a Freshman All-American by USA Today on Sunday after a stellar 2016 campaign.

Undersized at 6-5 and less than 220 pounds, Burns burst onto the scene in the home opener against Charleston Southern and never looked back. For the season, Burns ranks second on the Seminoles with 9.5 sacks, which leads all freshmen. Burns also has 24 total tackles and 10.5 for loss.

Burns and the No. 11 Seminoles will wrap up their 2016 campaign in Miami on Dec. 30 for the Capital One Orange Bowl against sixth-ranked Michigan.

Between the Lines

The FSU men’s tennis team wrapped up the Tallahassee Futures Tournament. The FSU men’s basketball team used 24 points from Dwayne Bacon and a double-double from Terance Mann to beat rival Florida on Sunday, 83-78.

On the Agenda

There are no FSU athletic events scheduled for Monday.

News and Notes

FSU guard Wilson Bell was arrested and released after failing to appear in court for a prior hit-and-run charge. Bell has been starting for the Seminoles at right guard since the injury to Landon Dickerson.

FSU’s men’s basketball team moved back into the AP Poll top 25 at No. 23 on Monday. The USA Today Coaches Poll also had the Seminoles at No. 23. FSU is 10-1 following a victory over Florida on Sunday.

FSU running back Dalvin Cook was named a first-team All-American by Associated Press, making him the 37th different player in FSU history to be named a Consensus All-American. Defensive end DeMarcus Walker was a second-team selection. Cook was also named a first-team All-American by ESPN.

Florida State wide receiver Kermit Whitfield will play in the East-West Shrine Game on Jan. 21 in St. Petersburg.

The FSU women are again ranked seventh in the AP Poll.

FSU running back Dalvin Cook and cornerback Tarvarus McFadden were each named first-team All-Americans by the Football Writers Association of America on Monday afternoon.
