Happy Monday, Florida State fans. The Seminoles are back in a New Year’s Six bowl, but it’s a pretty light day overall. The news and notes section of this post will be updated.

Lead Story

Florida State was given the nod for the Capital One Orange Bowl on Sunday afternoon, but the odds of it having its best overall defender back appear slim.

On Sunday afternoon, head coach Jimbo Fisher said it’s possible that sophomore safety Derwin James could play in the Dec. 30 contest against Michigan, but doubts that James will. James has been out since tearing his meniscus in the home opener against Charleston Southern on Sept. 10.

Last season, James ranked first or second for the Seminoles in total tackles, solo tackles, tackles for loss, sacks and forced fumbles. In less than two full games this season, James had 11 tackles and an interception.

Between the Lines

The FSU swimming and diving had a good weekend at the Georgia Invite while the FSU men’s tennis team hosted the Tallahassee Futures. The FSU men’s basketball team held George Washington to 23 percent shooting in a 67-48 victory at the BB&T Classic. The FSU women defeated Western Carolina 90-41 behind 18 points from Shakayla Thomas.

On the Agenda

FSU men’s tennis will continue to host the Tallahassee Futures Tournament.

News and Notes

ACC Players of the Week for various sports will be announced on Monday.

FSU opens as a 7.5-point underdog for the Orange Bowl against Michigan.

Florida State guards Leticia Romero and Shakayla Thomas were named to the Wade Trophy watch list, which annually goes to the nation’s best player.

Florida State’s men’s basketball team received 18 votes in this week’s AP Poll. That’s the fifth most among unranked teams. The Seminoles received just seven votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The FSU women’s basketball team moved up one spot to No. 7 in the latest AP Poll.
