Florida State football got it done on Saturday night with a thrilling 24-20 win over N.C. State, but Sunday is a busy day as well with some prominent match-ups on the schedule for FSU athletics. The news and notes section will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

Despite being seeded just sixth in the ACC Tournament, Florida State soccer sits one win away from a fourth straight ACC championship. To earn it, the Seminoles will have to take down No. 4 seed North Carolina.

The Tar Heels have reached the final in Charleston with wins over Virginia and top-seeded Notre Dame. The Seminoles opened the tournament by overcoming an early deficit at Duke to win on penalty kicks before blanking second-seeded Clemson on Friday.

With Cassie Miller in goal, FSU has been known mostly for its defense this year, but Megan Connolly and Deyna Castellanos are both talented scorers with six goals each. Freshman Bridgette Andrzejewski leads North Carolina with nine goals this season.

North Carolina won 1-0 behind a goal from Madison Schultz when the teams met on Oct. 27 to conclude the regular season in Chapel Hill. Sunday’s ACC title match will begin at noon EST and will air on ESPNU.

Between the Lines

Aside from FSU’s 24-20 victory over N.C. State, FSU women’s tennis team went a perfect 6-0 at the Seminole All-Conference Showdown. Both the FSU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams beat Florida Southern. The women’s team also defeated West Florida and Florida Gulf Coast.

On the Agenda

Aside from the ACC Soccer Championship, the FSU women’s tennis team will resume the Seminole All-Conference Showdown. FSU women’s basketball will take on St. Francis (Illinois) in an exhibition and FSU volleyball will host North Carolina at 1 p.m. EST. The match will air on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

With two sacks on Saturday, FSU senior defensive end DeMarcus Walker moved into the top 10 all-time at Florida State for that category. Walker has 10.5 sacks for the season.

FSU freshman defensive end Brian Burns was ejected for targeting in the fourth quarter on Saturday night and will miss the first half of Friday’s game against Boston College.

FSU moved up one spot in the Amway Coaches Poll to No. 18. In the AP Poll, FSU fell a spot to No. 20.

FSU picked up a commitment from a track star in Chauncy Smart on Sunday, but he’s also a 3-star football athlete.

FSU defeated North Carolina on penalty kicks to win a fourth straight ACC soccer championship.
