Saturday night offered Florida State fans a tough pill to swallow as FSU fell to Clemson 37-34, but Sunday is a new day and two other FSU programs will be in action. The news and notes section of this post will be updated.

Lead Story

There are many plays for Florida State that can be looked at from Saturday night’s 37-34 loss to third-ranked Clemson. One of the big ones however, was a chop blocked call on fullback Freddie Stevenson that negated a 50-yard run by running back Dalvin Cook in the fourth quarter.

The call came after a Clemson touchdown had narrowed the FSU lead to 28-26 midway through the fourth quarter. Cook’s run took the ball from the FSU 25-yard-line to the Tigers’ 25-yard-line and would have had the Seminoles in position to go up two scores with a touchdown. Replay showed that Stevenson appeared to get the defender on the front of the shin and the call should have never been made. On top of that penalty, FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher was assessed with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that pushed the Seminoles back inside their own 10-yard-line.

FSU wound up punting and giving the Tigers the ball near midfield where they would eventually cash in with a 46-yard field goal to go up 29-28. FSU would regain the lead later in the game, but had the call not been made, it would have at the very least flipped field position and could have given the Seminoles a chance to cement the victory. Fisher was not happy about the call when asked about it during the postgame press conference.

“Ridiculous. It’s not a chop,” Fisher said. “I’m going to tell you what: you hold coaches accountable, players accountable, hold the damn officials accountable. It’s garbage and then to call another penalty on the sideline is even more garbage. It’s cowardly, gutless and wrong.”
