Garnet Tops Gold 7-5 in First Fall Scrimmage

In the first of two fall scrimmages, the Garnet team finished on top, 7-5. Florida State will play a continuation game on Friday, where the Gold team will be batting first with the score still 7-5 in the first inning.

The Good: Freshman J.C. Flowers and sophomores Jackson Lueck, and Cal Raleigh all had productive games at the plate. All three finished with at least one run batted in and a double. Lueck took it to the next step with two home runs on the day, including an inside-the-park homer.

The Bad: Junior Drew Carlton got the start for the Gold team. Carlton allowed two earned runs and walked three in two innings of work.

The Ugly: In the fourth inning, the Garnet team committed three errors, threw two wild pitches, and walked two more batters. The Gold team plated four runs in the inning without a single hit.

Stud Of The Game: Andrew Karp took the mound in the bottom of the first for the Gold team with a 2-run lead. Karp, just two years removed from a life-threatening car accident, threw two good innings for the Seminoles allowing just one base-runner.

There was a lot to take away from Game 1 of the the 2-game scrimmage. For starters, Florida State has grass base paths from home to first and third to home. This new grass look could be in attempt to help with the bunting game — something the Seminoles struggled with last season.

The freshman on this team are not just good, but they want to start. Right field and third base are two interesting jobs. Freshman Tyler Daughtry had a very good game at the plate. A shortstop by trade, he could see some field time at multiple positions.

Nick Derr, another freshman also displayed his skills at the plate, along with transfer student Kyle Cavanaugh who could potentially give Quincy Nieporte a run as the FSU designated hitter.
