The Daily Nole — Oct. 10, 2016: FSU Volleyball Bounces Back to Beat N.C. State

Lead Story

After falling to North Carolina in straight sets on Friday, Florida State’s volleyball program bounced back nicely Sunday with a 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 27-25 victory over North Carolina State.

Katie Horton had a double-double for the Seminoles with 20 digs and 15 kills while Cecilie Woie recorded a match-high 28 digs in the victory. Mara Green added 12 kills for FSU as the Seminoles improved to 12-3 on the season and 5-1 in ACC play. Julia Brown had 17 kills and 11 digs for the Wolfpack in the loss.

FSU will be back in action again on Friday as it hosts Virginia Tech.

Between the Lines

The FSU women’s golf team is currently in the lead at the Jim West Challenge in Texas. The Seminoles are -15 and hold an 8-stroke lead over Texas and Kent State. Matilda Castren leads the individual standings. FSU softball defeated Tallahassee Community College in an exhibition on Sunday.

FSU soccer and Syracuse played to a 1-1 tie on Sunday in upstate New York. Alex Lamontagne scored for the Orange less than a minute into the match before Elin Jensen answered for the Seminoles in the 24th minute on an assist from Megan Connolly. Cassie Miller had three saves for FSU while Courtney Brosnan had 15 for Syracuse.

On the Agenda

The FSU women’s golf team will complete the Jim West Challenge.

News and Notes

Florida State moved up nine spots in the AP Poll from No. 23 to 14th. In the Amway Coaches Poll, the Seminoles jumped five spots from 21st to No. 16.

Florida State running back Dalvin Cook was named the ACC’s Offensive Back of the Week and quarterback Deondre Francois was named the conference’s Rookie of the Week for their performances in Saturday’s win over Miami.

Following Saturday’s 20-19 victory over No. 10 Miami, a new addition has been made to FSU’s Sod Cemetery. The Sod Cemetery is comprised on grass taken from opposing stadiums when the Seminoles win as a road underdog.

Florida State will host Louisiana-Monroe twice in the next three seasons. The Warhawks will visit Doak Campbell Stadium in 2017 and 2019. The 2019 contest with Boise State has also been moved from Sept. 7 to Aug. 31 and from Tallahassee to Jacksonville. The schools will still meet in Boise in 2020, but on Sept. 19 instead of Sept. 12.

Freshman linebacker Dontavious Jackson will make his first career start on Saturday against Wake Forest. Redshirt junior Matthew Thomas was ejected for targeting in the second half of FSU’s 20-19 win over Miami on Saturday and will be forced to sit the first half this week.
