Florida State fans will be holding their heads high on Sunday, following a thrilling 20-19 victory at Miami on Saturday. Sunday however, is a new day and we’ll have the latest on all things FSU athletics. The news and notes section will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

With the Florida State defense giving up 42.3 points per game to FBS opponents entering Saturday and many fans calling for defensive coordinator Charles Kelly’s job, the FSU defense rose to the occasion on Saturday night in a thrilling 20-19 victory over No. 10 Miami.

The Seminoles yielded a season-low 276 yards of offense, including just 68 on the ground on 28 carries. FSU also held the Hurricanes to 4-for-13 when it came to converting third downs. That comes one week after allowing North Carolina to go 9-for-13 on third down in a 37-35 loss. Derrick Nnadi finished with 2.5 of FSU’s seven tackles for loss and one of the Seminoles’ three sacks.

As for Kelly, he seems to be a coach that the players love and rally around. It’s not known whether or not the FSU defense can do enough the remainder of the year to save his job, but Saturday night was definitely a good start.

Between the Lines

In addition to FSU’s 20-19 football victory over Miami, FSU softball played the Garnet and Gold and defeated West Florida in a scrimmage.

On the Agenda

The FSU women’s golf team will begin the Jim West Challenge in Texas. The FSU softball team will play an exhibition against Tallahassee Community College. Both the FSU soccer and volleyball teams will be on the road at 1 p.m. EST. FSU volleyball will take on N.C. State while soccer visits Syracuse. The volleyball match will air on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

Both Florida State and Miami wore a red cross sticker on their helmets Saturday night in honor and memory of Hurricane Matthew victims. Each school also donated $50,000 to disaster relief.

Saturday’s contest against Wake Forest will air at 3:30 p.m. EST on ESPN. A time had previously been set, but not a network.

Due to complications, the release of the AP and Amway Coaches Polls were pushed back until Monday.
