Florida State and Miami are just hours from taking the field, but there are plenty of FSU athletic updates to be heard. The news and notes section for this post will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

Both the Florida State men’s and women’s took first place at the FSU Invitational in Tallahassee on Friday morning.

On the men’s side, the Seminoles had eight of the top 10 individual finishers with Harry Mulenga edging teammate Michael Callegari for first place. On the women’s side, Bridget Blake was the top finisher for FSU, finishing second overall.

On each side, FSU took first place with 51 points. UCF finished second on the women’s side with 56 points. Jacksonville was second with 56 points in the men’s race. Fewer points is better when it comes to cross country scores.

Between the Lines

The FSU men’s tennis team was in action at the Georgia Tech Invitational while the Seminoles’ volleyball team fell to North Carolina in straight sets, 25-12, 25-22, 25-21. Cecilie Woie and Katie Horton each finished with 11 digs while Mara Green and Milica Kubura were tied for the team-lead with eight kills.

On the Agenda

Aside from the big one — the football game between FSU and Miami — which begins at 8 p.m. EST on ABC, the FSU softball team will be holding the Garnet and Gold game before taking on West Florida in an exhibition. The swimming and diving meets against Duke and Minnesota scheduled for Tallahassee were canceled because of Hurricane Matthew.

News and Notes

Hard Rock Stadium passed a post-storm evaluation on Friday, allowing the contest between FSU and Miami to go on as planned.

The Marching Chiefs, FSU’s band, did not travel to South Florida for the contest. The decision was made as a precautionary measure with roads still being shut down because of Hurricane Matthew.

Florida State strength and conditioning coach Vic Viloria will be back on the sidelines for Saturday night’s contest. Viloria was suspended through the first five games after being charged with driving under the influence in late August.
