FSU Commits, Targets Shine at The Opening

From start to finish in Eugene, Oregon over the weekend, college football’s top prospects made noise at The Opening. For Florida State commitments and targets, the case was no different.

One of the big headlines from the event for FSU was the addition of 4-star running back Khalan Laborn. Laborn announced that he intended to become a Seminole on Friday night by pulling up in a Lamborghini with an FSU decal on the side.

While it was hard to be louder than Laborn was with his FSU commitment, a number of other high school stars who could end up in the garnet and gold made their voices heard over the weekend as well:

COMMITMENTS

Florida State wide receiver commit D.J. Matthews, a 4-star prospect out of Jacksonville, was one of the receivers to shine in Oregon over the weekend. Matthews has been committed to the Seminoles for nearly two years and is ranked the No. 61 overall prospect in the country.

Cornerback Stanford Samuels III, a 5-star South Florida prospect, is the highest ranked player committed to FSU for 2017. Samuels wasn’t thrown on all that often during the opening, but made plays when he was.

Cory Durden is a 4-star defensive tackle commitment from Newberry, Florida. At 6-4 and more than 320 pounds, Durden is a load to block and impressed with his power in Eugene.

Zaquandre White is a 4-star Fort Myers prospect and one of two running backs committed to Florida State. Here’s a look at White against former FSU commit VanDarius Cowan. Cowan flipped from FSU to Alabama in April.

Here’s Laborn, Florida State’s other running back committed for 2017:

TARGETS

As impressive as Florida State commitments were over the weekend, it was also a good one for FSU targets. Marvin Wilson might be the Seminoles’ biggest remaining target. The 5-star defensive tackle out of Texas is considering FSU, LSU, Alabama and Texas among others. Here’s Wilson working against Ohio State commit Wyatt Davis:

Jerry Jeudy is a 4-star receiver that is on Florida State’s radar and the No. 44 prospect in the country. Jeudy is considered by most to be an Alabama lean at this point.

OTHER NEWS

The Seminoles received some good news over the weekend as 5-star defensive end and 2018 prospect Xavier Thomas announced his top 4. Joining FSU for the Florence, South Carolina prospect’s services were Ohio State and in-state schools South Carolina and Clemson.

Overall, FSU currently has the No. 8 national class for 2017. Florida State is currently No. 2 for 2018 behind rival Miami.
