It’s too early to put much stock into the 2017 football recruiting class rankings and way too early to think too hard about the 2018 rankings, but for the time being, Florida State is on top.

FSU overtook rival Miami for the No. 1 class for 2018 on Monday as Miami Central High School prospect James Cook was given a 4-star ranking and listed as the No. 3 back for 2018. That’s according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Cook, the younger brother of current FSU star running back Dalvin Cook, committed to the Seminoles in March. He was initially thought to be a 2019 prospect, but was reclassified as a 2018 commitment last month.

At 5-10 and 190 pounds, Cook is listed as the No. 45 overall prospect for 2018 and one of five already committed to FSU from that class. Three of those members — 4-star athlete Justin Watkins, 4-star defensive tackle Robert Cooper and 4-star cornerback Isaiah Bolden — committed to Florida State earlier this month.

Florida State’s five commitments is tied with LSU for the second most for 2018. Only rival Miami has more with six. The Seminoles currently have the No. 8 overall class for 2017.
