FSU Coach, Former QB Visit Orlando Shooting Survivors

Florida State kicks off its 2016 season in Orlando against Ole Miss, but on Wednesday, head coach Jimbo Fisher was in the City Beautiful to visit survivors of the largest mass-shooting in recent U.S. history.

On June 12, 49 people were shot to death and 53 others were injured inside Pulse, a gay nightclub, by 29-year-old shooter Omar Mateen. Many vigils have been held in the greater Orlando area to remember the victims of the tragic events that took place just more than a week ago. On Wednesday, Fisher along with his former quarterback Jameis Winston did their part to try to comfort the survivors.

Both Fisher and Winston, the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner and current starting quarterback for the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, have each had their critics, but most would agree that traveling to Orlando to try to spread some much-needed cheer, is certainly a worthwhile cause.

Winston however, isn’t the only former Heisman Trophy winner to visit Orlando survivors. On Tuesday, it was reported that former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow made the stop to visit his former teammate Rodney Sumter, who was among the 53 injured in the shooting earlier this month.

Whether you pull for the garnet and gold, the orange and blue, someone else or no one at all, it’s nice to see athletes and coaches do their parts to show support for something much bigger than football.
