FSU Agrees to Extension with Baseball Coach Mike Martin

If Florida State head baseball coach Mike Martin is to get that coveted first College World Series crown, he’ll have until at least 2018 to do it.

That’s because FSU agreed to a 1-year extension with its longtime head coach on Tuesday, securing him through the 2018 season.

“I am very pleased that Mike Martin will continue to lead our baseball program,” athletic director Stan Wilcox said in a release. “He is one of the most highly respected coaches in college athletics and his leadership of our perennially successful program goes far beyond wins and losses. We had a young team this year, and the future continues to look very bright for Seminole baseball.”

Martin’s 37th season at the helm, ended Monday night with a 7-0 loss to Florida in the decisive game of the Super Regional. In each of Martin’s 37 seasons at the helm, the Seminoles have won at least 40 games and reached the NCAA Tournament.

“Every day that I have coached at Florida State and worked with the caliber of student-athletes that I get to coach has been a blessing and a privilege,” said Martin in a release. “I appreciate the confidence that Stan (Wilcox) and our university administration have in our program. I am as excited about the opportunities ahead of us here at FSU as I was the day I was given the job.”

Martin is college baseball’s winningest active coach with 1,898 career victories. That numbers ranks third all-time behind only Augie Garrido and Gordie Gillespie.
