Florida State third baseman John Sansone became the first Seminole taken in the 2016 Major League Draft on Friday as Sansone was selected 228th overall — the second pick in the eighth round — by the Cincinnati Reds.

After hitting around .250 for much of his career, Sansone has had a breakout season as a senior. This season, Sansone is batting .374 with nine homers and a team-high 65 RBIs. Sansone’s 25 doubles leads the ACC.

Over the last month, Sansone has been honored as a first-team All-ACC selection and a third-team All-American by Louisville Slugger.

One of the few seniors on the squad, Sansone will look to help Florida State reach the College World Series for the first time since 2012. Sansone and the Seminoles will begin the best-of-three Super Regional on Saturday night against No. 1 overall national seed Florida.

The draft will last through round 10 on Friday before concluding with the final 30 rounds on Saturday.
