Jay Carney "Dems Will Get Walloped in November"

Obama’s Old Guy Says Dems Will Get Walloped in November

Freed from the constraints of serving as the White House Press Secretary for the Obama administration, Jay Carney served up conventional wisdom bluntly Sunday morning: November’s midterm elections will probably bring Democrats some pain.

Speaking candidly on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Carney stated:

It’s not going to be a good year for Democrats by definition. The sixth year is always particularly bad for a president’s party. You couple that with the fact so many seats are defended by Democrats in red states where Mitt Romney did very well against the president, double-digits in most cases, and there’s no outcome in November that anybody could say would be great for Democrats, except for barely holding onto the Senate.

Carney noted, however, that victory could be a double-edged sword for the GOP.

“The problem for Republicans if they win is Americans begin to think that, ‘We hate Congress,’ and it is now clear that one party is in control of Congress,” Carney noted.

So, what is going to change?
I am going to tear down your safe space
Brick by brick I shall smash it with glee
You cannot stop me from getting inside
I am cold and I am hard and my name is 'Reality'

On budget bills, the reconciliation process will prevail, and Obama will spend all his time with his pen, vetoing everything in sight. Obama then won't be able to blame everything on Congress without getting at least some token pushback. Since the ACA was passed using reconciliation, we may see an attempted repeal using the same method.

Republicans holding the Senate will affect ratification of treaties, and appointments. Obama's nominations will need to be more moderate.

Since Harry Reid opened the genie bottle, we may even see the nuclear option unleashed.

The GOP will need to be smart, which is something they haven't shown too much in the recent past. IF they are truly smart, they will have all their ducks lined up so they can push through legislation as soon as they convene in January. I suspect they will be true to form and wait to draft legislation after the next term starts.

Maybe they will get to a few of the 362 bills sitting on Harry's desk. Not sure if that's will be good or bad.

If the GOP takes the Senate they would be very foolish to totally nuke the filibuster because Dems could easily take back the Senate in 2016 with all the GOP seats up for grabs in blue and swing states. And you know Dems would use the opportunity with Hillary in the White House to jam all sorts of bills down the GOP's throat without a filibuster to worry about.

Also, we know that if the GOP wins the Senate it will be McConnell running the show, meaning conservatives will be ignored.

On the plus side, the GOP will force Obama to veto a number of bills to score political points. However, seeing how deeply divided the GOP is on hot button issues it will be fun to see if the GOP can muster enough votes in the Senate (which will be a razor this majority) to pass these "gotcha" bills.

I don't know about this. If the GOP takes the Senate, which they likely will, they can do all kinds of things to further derail Obama and plummet his approval rating even further.

Firstly would be to pass a conservative's dream for a budget. Since budgets cannot be filibustered, the GOP could load theirs with whatever they want with the guarantee it would make it to the presidents desk and force him to veto. Then they could draw up another one, pass it, and force Obama to veto all over again. And all the while, complain that Obama isn't doing his job by blocking budgets.

Worse would be the debt ceiling. They could load up a new debt ceiling with whatever conservative goodies they want and once again force Obama to veto it. If the government shuts down, the Prez would likely take the fall and his numbers would sink even further.

And of course, once Obama has ratings equal or worse to Bush's, the Dems chances in 2016 suddenly become exponentially harder. Winning the Senate would open up all kinds of opportunities for the Republicans.

Disagree. The GOP has shut down the government the last 2 times and the last 2 times over the past 30 years.

They have branded themselves the "shutdown" party and if the government shuts down again the GOP will get blasted for it.

Besdies, we all know that the GOP Establishment hates the conservatives more than the socialists and will gleefully let them twist in the wind just for the fun of it. So I really do not believe McConnell and Boehner will shut down the government.

They will make Obama veto a few bills to score points back home - but then cave and work a compromise with Obama because that is what the big corporations want.

    It's all very predictable.

Then 2016 will come and the GOP will descend into global thermo-nuclear war over the nomination and either Cruz will get the nomination and the GOP will get steamrolled - or another RINO will get the nomination and the libertarian conservatives will stay home and the GOP will get steamrolled.

The real shame is that we have to wait till 2020 to undue the 2010 gerrymander GOP jihad - but the silver lining is by then the demographics will have swung North Carolina, Georgia and Florida solidly into the blue column - thus pretty much ending competition for the White House.

Slowly but sure the conservative movement will fizzle out and retreat into the red states where it is still a viable political platform. All the Dems have to do is be patient and wait for the old white conservatives to die off.

The last 2 times this country went into deep economic turmoil we got FDR (4 times) and a tidal wave of socialist policies that are entrenched in our laws - and the 2nd time we got Obama (twice) and the ACA.

So, you say you want a 3rd time?

Well, OK - if you insist.

Yeah, you'll be waiting until the day you die - wondering all along if it will happen tomorrow.

Of course you want to dollar to crash for political reasons - which makes you an America hater.

Guess if we can't have the economic policies you want you'll root for total destruction.

    That makes you a traitor.

Love it or leave it pal - lol....................

    .
If that happens, can't wait to see filibusters attacked by the present defenders, like you.

Main difference would be committees and what gets to the floor, though don't expect many votes on actual bills if democrats have learned the republicans tricks on filibusters. Appointments will be more difficult

Re: Jay Carney "Dems Will Get Walloped in November"

Remember, when the Dollar crashes ,... the dollar will become WORTHLESS....

You give someone a $400 card for food stamps,... and a Steak will cost $75.00
Loaf of Bread will cost $30.00 6 pack of Budwiser will cost $80.00

I really do not think you understand the concept of the Dollar collapsing,...
If you did,... you would know that the GOVERNMENT will not be able to pay for a damn thing! Period.

The only thing that seem like it is gonna be able to Make AMERICA great again,...is to get rid of LIBERAL policies,....

There only seems to be one way that is gonna happen,...

You better hope a Tea Partier gets in the White house,...and turns everything around,... or it will happen SOONER rather than LATER....

If the Country goes all Blue like you are Hoping,... It will happen Almost OVERNIGHT...

Going by your logic,... Wishing every state to turn blue is UNAMERICAN.... and you are the TRAITOR because Blue is what will CRASH THE DOLLAR..... Oh brilliant one....

This, IMO, is a spot on analysis. The GOP will know that they won't be able to pass much of their preferred social legislation like limiting abortion, reaffirming the ban on gay marriage, and perhaps loosening gun control. And they likely will punt on immigration. So I see them spending their time on spending issues. Trying to cut spending in things like welfare and various agencies like the EPA and the Department of Education. And of course voting to repeal the ACA.
