Plant City gives new city manager an 11% raise

Before he starts. Yes, the skillful negotiators on the City Commission of the Strawberry Capital hired a new city manager, who agreed to all of the terms of his contract and accepted the job. At their next commission meeting, they decided to pay him $15k MORE than what he'd agreed to receive .

    WTF?

Sounds like the new guy got a better offer from somewhere else and they decided it was worth matching.

Happens all the time in business.

Yep, but I wonder if he can be fired without cause and not rec any of that pay after termination? This guy is beholden to the city council and a vote of no confidence generally means you pack your trash and are gone most ricky tic.

No indication at all that he had another offer; in fact, it indicates that it was not requested by him (nor was he expecting it) & was done by suggestion of one of the commissioners. The guy has been working for either the city of Tampa or Hillsborough County for awhile.

One of the commissioners supported the idea because they also dropped, after-the-fact, a requirement that he live in the city limits - so by dropping that requirement they'd save money by not paying his moving costs (he lives nearby, in Lakeland).

It's true that city managers work at the will of the commission & can be fired based on politics. It's also true that the vast majority have contracts that include substantial severance packages if they DO get fired.

I like it when people do the right thing. It is nice to see a good news story.
