TAKEAWAYS

1. Garnet has excitement edge at offensive skill positions
The explosiveness and the playmakers on the offensive side of the ball for Saturday’s spring game appear to heavily reside on the Garnet roster. In the backfield are leading returning rusher Cam Akers and much-hyped Khalan Laborn while outside are two players who have had outstanding springs in Tamorrion Terry and D.J. Matthews. That’s not a shot at the Gold’s Jacques Patrick, Amir Raul and Keith Gavin, but the explosion seemed to be mostly on the other sideline.

2. Garnet is loaded in the secondary
If sophomore quarterback James Blackman wants to make a statement on Saturday, he’ll have to do it while taking on a loaded opposing secondary. The cornerback quartet headlined by Levonta Taylor and accompanied by Stanford Samuels III, Carlos Becker and Kyle Meyers could feature the top four players at the position for FSU this season. Safety Hamsah Nasirildeen is also a candidate to start.

3. Gold has the veteran offensive line, Garnet has the upside
Protecting James Blackman on Saturday will be a group of players who have seen meaningful time on the field, including center Alec Eberle, guards Corey Martinez and Cole Minshew and tackle Josh Ball. On the other sideline however, will be a few guys with a ton of potential. The names to watch there will be center Baveon Johnson and tackle Jauan Williams. With a strong spring game and fall, both are candidates to crack the starting lineup.

4. Gold has the veteran edge on the defensive line
As is the case up front on the offensive side of the ball, the Gold team also has the veteran edge along the defensive line. Defensive ends Brian Burns and Joshua Kaindoh headline that unit, but Wally Aime and Fred Jones have seen plenty of the field at defensive tackle over the last two seasons. Adam Torres has never had a meaningful role, but is in his fifth year with the program.

5. Gold is thin at receiver, linebacker
With last season’s leading receiver Nyqwan Murray done for the spring, the Gold team has just two scholarship players at both wide receiver and linebacker. At receiver is Keith Gavin and converted running back Deonte’ Sheffield. The only two linebackers on the roster are Leonard Warner and Adonis Thomas. The Garnet team has at least four scholarship players at each of those positions.
