The Daily Nole — March 17, 2018: FSU Women Open NCAA Tournament

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Florida State fans. As your weekend begins and your day moves along, keep it here for the latest in FSU athletics. The news and notes section of this post will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

Florida State’s women’s hoops will look to follow the men’s lead on Saturday as the third-seeded Seminoles open the NCAA Tournament in Tallahassee against 14th-seeded Arkansas Little-Rock.

FSU is 25-6 and reached the ACC Tournament semifinals before falling to Notre Dame. Shakayla Thomas, a senior forward, is a Cheryl Miller Award finalist and averages 17.3 points to lead the Seminoles along with nearly seven rebounds. Sharpshooter Imani Wright also averages 17 points per game for Florida State.

Arkansas Little-Rock, the champions of the Sun Belt, is 23-9. Ronjanae DeGray averages neaarly 14 points and six rebounds to lead the Trojans. Three other players averages at least 7.9 points per game.

Saturday’s contest is set to tip off at 11 a.m. EST. The contest will air on ESPN2.

Between the Lines

FSU women’s swimming and diving continued the NCAA Championships on Friday. FSU track and field participated in the UCF Black and Gold Challenge. FSU women’s tennis fell to N.C. State, 4-3, while the men topped Drake, 6-1. FSU softball defeated Virginia Tech, 2-0. FSU baseball fell at home to Notre Dame, 8-7. FSU men’s basketball defeated Missouri in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 67-54.

On the Agenda

In addition to women’s basketball, FSU women’s swimming and diving will conclude the NCAA Championships on Saturday. FSU track and field will continue the UCF Black and Gold Challenge as well as take part in the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta. FSU beach volleyball will be in Tavares to take on Houston Baptist and Jacksonville. FSU softball and baseball continue their series with Virginia Tech and Notre Dame, respectively. The baseball game begins at 2 p.m. EST and airs on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

FSU track and field’s Trey Cunningham was named ACC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year while Bob Braman was both the men’s and women’s ACC Coach of the Year.

Xavier opens as a 6-point favorite over FSU in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The FSU women topped Arkansas-Little Rock to open the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, 91-49.

FSU baseball defeated Notre Dame on Saturday at Dick Howser Stadium, 6-4.

FSU women’s swimming and diving finished in 42nd place at the NCAA Championships.
