The Florida State spring game continues to go old school.

On Thursday, the school announced that the spirit spear will return for the April 14 spring football game. The Tallahassee Democrat’s Curt Weiler reported that the spear made its debut in 1984 and remained until the 1990s. It was used to measure crowd noise.

The spear is the latest in a number of retro endeavors. The Seminoles will also sport old-school end zones and feature Vanilla Ice and Salt N’ Pepa in a postgame concert.

Between the Lines

FSU beach volleyball blanked Loyola Marymount, 5-0, on Thursday, but lost to Long Beach State, 4-1. FSU women’s swimming and diving continued the NCAA Championships in Columbus.

On the Agenda

FSU swimming and diving will continue the NCAA Championships on Friday. FSU women’s tennis will host N.C. State while the men take on Drake. FSU softball opens ACC play against Virginia Tech while FSU baseball begins a 3-game series with Notre Dame. Both contests begin at 6 p.m. EST. The baseball contest airs on ACC Network Extra. FSU basketball will take on Missouri in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at 9:50 p.m. EST on TBS.

News and Notes

FSU officially announced its football support staff.

Former FSU guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes was waived by the Memphis Grizzlies as his 10-day contract expired.

FSU women’s 400-meter medley relay team earned second-team All-American honors on Thursday.

FSU baseball was defeated by Notre Dame on Friday night, 8-7.

FSU basketball defeated Missouri on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Nashville, 67-54.
