The Daily Nole — March 3, 2018: FSU Women to Face Notre Dame in ACC Semis

It’s the weekend, Florida State fans. As you settle in for a big day in FSU sports or some leisure time with your family, keep it here for the latest in FSU athletics. We’ll update the news and notes section of this post throughout the day.

Lead Story

Florida State’s women’s basketball team is now two wins away from its first ACC title. The third-seeded Seminoles topped No. 6 seed Miami in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals on Friday night, 73-69, and will move on to face No. 2 seed Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish are coming off an 83-47 thrashing of Virginia and own a record of 28-2 for the season. Arike Ogunbowale averages more than 20 points per game to lead Notre Dame while Jessica Shepard, Jackie Young and Marina Mabrey all average at least 14.

Kathryn Westbeld finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead six Notre Dame players in double-figures in a regular season win over FSU in Tallahassee on Jan. 28, 100-69. Imani Wright paced the Seminoles with 23 points in the loss and scored 20 in Friday’s win over Miami.

Tip-off between the two teams is set for 2:30 p.m. EST. The contest will air on ESPNU.

Between the Lines

In addition to the ACC Tournament contest, FSU men’s tennis topped Clemson 5-2 on Friday while the women downed the Tigers, 6-1. FSU beach volleyball beat St. Petersburg College 5-0 and 4-0 in separate matches. FSU softball opened the Unconquered Invitational with a 1-0 loss to Hofstra in 10 innings and a 5-0 loss to Oregon. FSU baseball defeated UNC-Asheville, 9-2.

On the Agenda

In addition to Saturday’s ACC semifinal, FSU beach volleyball will take on College of Charleston and Stetson. FSU softball will continue the Unconquered Invitational with games against Florida Gulf Coast and Hofstra. FSU men’s basketball will host Boston College at 2 p.m. EST on ACC Network. FSU baseball continues its series with UNC-Asheville at 6 p.m. EST in a contest that airs on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

FSU basketball defeated Boston College on Saturday afternoon, 85-76.

FSU baseball defeated UNC-Asheville on a walk-off single by Drew Mendoza on Saturday night, 4-3.

FSU women’s hoops players Chatrice White, A.J. Alix, Ama Degbeon and Imani Wright were all named to the All-ACC Academic team.

The FSU women fell to Notre Dame in the ACC Tournament semifinals on Saturday, 90-80.

FSU will be the No. 8 seed in the ACC Tournament and will face No. 9 seed Louisville on Wednesday.
