Bracketology: FSU Seems Safe Despite Skid

It was tough week for Florida State as the Seminoles dropped a pair of road contests.

After losing to N.C. State on Sunday night, 92-72, in a contest that might not have been as close as the score indicated, the Seminoles fell at Clemson on Wednesday, 76-63, in a game that was actually closer than the final score would indicate. Despite the two losses, the Seminoles still seem to be in the field with some leeway, according to the experts:

Projections
ESPN: West Region No. 8 vs. (9) Butler in Wichita (March 1)
CBS Sports: Midwest Region No. 10 vs. (7) Nevada in Detroit (March 2)
SB Nation: East Region No. 9 vs. (8) Missouri in Boston (Feb. 27); No. 9 seed, No. 33 overall (March 2)
NBC Sports: East Region No. 9 vs. (8) TCU in Boston (March 2)
USA Today: East Region No. 9 vs. (8) Arizona State in Wichita (March 2)

Summary
The most common seed this week for FSU was a No. 9, according to SB Nation’s Chris Dobbertean, USA Today’s duo of Shelby Mast and Scott Gleeson and NBC Sports’ Dave Ommen. Both Dobbertean and Ommen have the Seminoles bound for Boston as part of the East Region.

Ommen pits the Seminoles against eighth-seeded TCU in what would be the first match-up between the schools since the Horned Frogs topped the Seminoles, 71-70, at the Corpus Christi Invitational in November 2004. The teams did meet in the NCAA Tournament in the first round in 1998 with 12th-seeded FSU prevailing over No. 5 seed TCU, 96-87.

Dobbertean shows the Seminoles facing Missouri. FSU holds a 2-1 edge all-time in the series, but the teams haven’t met since a 68-64 Seminole victory in Atlanta in December 1980.

The USA Today tandem matches up FSU and Arizona State in the Midwest Region in Wichita. Those teams have never met on the hardwood.

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, who currently has FSU in the best position as a No. 8 seed, also places the Seminoles in Wichita. Lundari pits FSU against eighth-seeded Butler in the West Region. The Bulldogs topped the Seminoles in the 2010 Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii, 67-64, in the last meeting.

CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm has the Seminoles currently as the lowest seed as a No. 10 in the Midwest Region in Detroit. Palm pits FSU against Nevada, a No. 7 seed. The Wolf Pack and Seminoles have never met on the hardwood.

FSU wraps up the regular season on Saturday against Boston College. The Eagles are 17-13 on the season and 7-10 in ACC play, but not in anyone’s bracket. Dobbertean lists Boston College as the No. 86 overall team.
