The 1992-93 season for Florida State was a memorable one on the hardwood. With four future NBA players in Charlie Ward, Sam Cassell, Bob Sura and Doug Edwards, the Seminoles earned the No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament and advanced all the way to the Elite Eight where they fell to Kentucky.

FSU unfortunately hasn’t been back, but on the 25th anniversary of that season, it’s fun to look back on what the Seminoles accomplished. During the regular season, Florida State defeated six ranked teams, including one on this day 25 years ago.

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons came to the Donald L. Tucker Center on Feb. 10, 1993 feeling like a confident basketball team. The Seminoles had defeated Wake in Winston-Salem earlier in the season by a 74-72 margin, but the Demon Deacons had won seven straight coming in and were ranked No. 9 in the country behind the smooth left-handed stroke of Rodney Rogers and the talented Randolph Childress.

In the first top 10 ACC match-up at the Donald L. Tucker Center however, the Seminole offense was too much for even Wake Forest to keep up with. Florida State shot 58 percent from the field and scored a season-high in a 111-94 victory.

FSU led 57-44 at halftime before cruising to the 17-point victory. Cassell finished with 25 points on 10-for-14 shooting to go with six assists and three steals. Sura added 22 points and seven rebounds while Edwards also filled up the box score with 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Senior Rodney Dobard had his second-highest scoring total of the season with 19 points on 9-for-11 shooting while adding seven rebounds.

The win at the time was the fifth straight and got the Seminoles to 8-2 in ACC play. It would be 24 years later before top 10 ACC teams squared off at the Donald L. Tucker Center again and that was last season’s 88-72 win over Duke. The first time however, happened on this day 25 years ago.
