Florida State’s history on the hardwood isn’t quite as illustrious as it is in other sports, but it all started on this day 70 years ago.

It was Dec. 10, 1947 when FSU played its first-ever basketball game. Led by head coach Don Loucks, the Seminoles took on Spring Hill College at the West Campus Gym in Tallahassee in front of an announced crowd of 514.

It was a tight contest, but in the end, the Seminoles prevailed 39-36. FSU trailed 36-35 in the final minute before Larry Dickson scored the game’s final four points.

Dickson finished with seven points in the victory. The Seminoles were led by Jim Pavy, who was the only FSU player to score in double-figures with 11 points.

The Seminoles would finish just 5-13 in their first year of basketball, which remains the fewest wins in school-history. Still, it was that team that started it all for FSU and they did so on this day seven decades ago.
