It’s the weekend, Florida State fans. As you enjoy your day off, for those you to whom it applies, keep it here for the latest in FSU athletics. The news and notes section of this post will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

It appears that safety Derwin James won’t be the only Florida State player skipping the Independence Bowl against Southern Mississippi. Senior wide receiver Ermon Lane took to Twitter on Friday night to make a similar announcement.

Lane arrived at FSU as a highly-touted 5-star wide receiver, but after making minimal impact, moved to safety as a junior midway through 2016. With the Seminoles short on pass-catchers, Lane made the transition back to receiver this past season.

Unlike James, Lane isn’t regraded as a big time NFL prospect and there is speculation there were academic issues. Lane will finish his career defensively with 50 total tackles, 0.5 for loss and one interception. As a receiver, Lane concludes his career with 27 receptions for 486 yards and one touchdown.

Then let’s forget about Josh Sweat, Derrick Nnadi, Jacques Patrick, Demarcus Christmas and Tarvarus McFadden. At some point, why play the game at all? If it’s really THAT meaningless, what the heck is the point? Lane was at best a sixth-round prospect.

On the other hand, if it’s an academic issue…
